Painters Hall is a 100 percent solar-powered building nestled in the beautiful surroundings of quiet Pringle Creek community, in Salem, Oregon. The 80-year-old Painters Hall recently earned a LEED-Platinum, net-zero energy certification, and it also received an impressive ‘Petal Recognition’ under the Living Building Challenge. The building underwent an extensive renovation in 2010, and it recently became just one of two buildings in the country to receive the net-zero recognition after recent energy audits.

Heralded as one of the first zero-energy, zero-carbon commercial buildings in the US, the IDeAs Z2 Design Facility is located in a formerly windowless bank that has been transformed into a light-filled eco-friendly space. Designed to produce more electric energy than it uses, the building’s harvests the sun’s rays with a massive rooftop-mounted photovoltaic system. A collaboration between EHDD Architecture, mechanical engineers Integral Group, and IDEAS, this inspired renovation turned a 1960’s concrete cube into a relaxing, spacious office.

When we first broke the news of the split between Passivhaus Institute (PHI) and Passive House US (PHIUS), it was a murky proposition to project what the results would be. That answer has become much clearer in the past months after a series of proposed changes and intense debate within the community. The conversation heated up in the last week as those aligned with PHI asked PHIUS to choose a different name for their certification system from Passive House, and Katrin Klingenberg, head of the American group, got personal in her response. The question on everyone’s mind is: “how much damage does this cause the movement?”

This apartment building in Upper Castle, Switzerland is the world’s first to be heated exclusively by solar thermal energy. The building borrows heavily from traditional Swiss chalet architecture with its steep roof and simple, boxy enclosure — except it is completely heated by the sun. In fact, developer Josef Jenni’s huge solar thermal roof produces twice the heat of what the building needs. Designed as the first building to use this technology at such a scale, the breakthrough apartment will serve as a model for future projects to come.

SMA is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of inverters for photovoltaic systems, so they stepped up to the challenge of building a world-class solar-powered training facility in Niestetal, Germany. The resulting Solar Training Center is an inspired integrated solar design that packs an extraordinary photovoltaic wall and a zero-energy footprint into a clean contemporary form. HHS Architekten’s design is actually completely self-sufficient with no grid support, making it a perfect model for demonstrating the viability of large-scale independent buildings and green building design.

As the Solar Decathlon competition comes to a head in Madrid, the leaders of the pack have emerged! The amazing Armadillo Box by the French team from École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Grenoble has been holding steady as a top competitor for the entire week. Right now the adorably-named Armadillo Box is in third place behind the University of Rosenheim IKAROS House and the leader from the US – Virginia Polytechnic’s Lumenhaus. The competition is heating up — will the Armadillo Box’s energy-efficient exterior and cool interior put a damper on the Lumenhaus’ high-tech shifting facade? Only this weekend will tell!

Team Wuppertal brought an intimate but expansive vision to the Solar Decathlon Europe this year. Their sun-powered house is flanked by solar walls, capped by a solar roof, and provides multiple spaces to enjoy a sunny day. They pulled out some nice design tricks to make the space work like a much larger home, and included an advanced HVAC system to maintain a comfortable climate — factors which have launched this home into the top ranks of the competition. Read on as our exclusive coverage continues!
