Japanese firm Kyocera is known for impressive eco-friendly innovations and endeavors, ranging from the development of a flexible OLED cell phone to the installation of Japan’s largest solar farm — but when it comes to their own offices, they turned to the beautifully lo-fi solution of growing edible green curtains along exterior walls. As the curtains produce vegetables for use in the company’s cafeteria, they also keep the buildings cool, reduce energy consumption, mitigate carbon emissions and provide a calming, shaded view for those working inside.

Compelled by the disappearance of house sparrows due to the depletion of their natural environment, students Micaela Nardella and Oana Tudose designed Brick Biotope, a set of bricks that doubles as a habitat for birds. Shown at FABRIKAAT, a Dutch exhibition showcased in the Ventura Lambrate District for Milan Design Week, the project also does triple duty as a vertical garden.

The glass high-rises in Singapore’s commercial district will soon get a neighbor of an altogether different color. The Oasia Downtown tower by WOHA will be literally clad in greenery, with multiple levels of the building completely open for gardens stacked one upon another. The design brings the tropics into the heart of the city with a greenscaped core, and the building will also be naturally cooled, saving energy while providing ample places for occupants to stroll through the gardens.

VERDMX is an independent civic initiative working on a project called BREATHE / GREEN ROUTE which proposes bringing 7 sculptures with vertical gardens to locations throughout the country. The project hopes to transform public spaces in Mexico City, combining innovation, art, civic culture, urban planning, CSR and social interaction with the natural production of oxygen. To promote BREATHE / GREEN ROUTE, VERDMX recently organized a flash mob performance with the concept of a natural jungle inside the concrete jungle. Check out a video of the performance here and visit VERDMX’s site for more information.
