Tommaso Guerra is an Italian designer, illustrator and street artist all rolled into one. And just like his multi-faceted self, his Lampada Ragno incorporates a network of six lamps connected at one point on the ceiling (“ragno” is the Italian word for “spider”). With pipes made in copper, and a delicate lamp shade in rounded wood riveted with aluminium, this piece is certainly a standout. We especially love the balance it strikes as a great interior lighting product and a work of art.

New Zealand-based designer Timothy John has created an entire collection of everyday products made almost entirely from felt. His Woven Collection includes a clock, two lamps, a table, and and flower vase made from the warm biodegradable material. By weaving pitch-black industrial felt strips into voluminous new shapes, John gives old-fashioned objects a contemporary twist.

Taking advantage of the renewable and biodegradable attributes of coffee, Spanish designer Raúl Laurí created an innovative, experimental and very cute lamp. Dubbed the Decafé Lamp, it is made from a new composite material made from recycled coffee grounds. Shaped like a cup, this comforting, aromatic luminaire has a switchless design – to turn it on simply pick it up and place it on its base.

Axalko’s stunning wooden bicycle is truly a work of art, handcrafted from ash wood into a beautiful piece of functional design. Aptly named after a quick-witted fox from a childhood fable, the Axalko bike boasts a lightweight hollow frame and micro-lamination for improved resistance. The bike is the inspired design of two brothers, Aitzol and Andoitz Tellería, who joined forces with Enrique Ardura in the north of Spain six years ago to test the natural durability of the ash wood, and to construct a bicycle that would be both fast and sturdy.

The cement manufacturing process has a staggering carbon footprint – said to be responsible for up to 7 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, the industry releases around 9 lbs of carbon dioxide for every 10 lbs of cement produced. With global production standing at around three billion tonnes each year, there remains a huge need to find a greener method of production. While there have been various efforts in recent years, researchers at George Washington University have devised the first technique, called Solar Thermal Electrochemical Production (STEP), to completely eliminate CO2 emissions from the process, and it would even be cheaper than current methods of production.
