Big news out of the Big Apple: Cornell University announced last night that Thom Mayne of Morphosis Architects will design the first of three net-zero academic buildings on its new applied sciences campus on Roosevelt Island. Morphosis beat out six other finalists, including SOM, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and Steven Holl Architects. Morphosis hasn’t unveiled the proposed design just yet, but there’s speculation that it will bear some similarity to the firm’s Cooper Union campus building in lower Manhattan. Initial drafts of the building are expected to be released to the public by November 2012.

After almost losing a finger in a workshop accident, artist Nao Matsumoto meditated on the importance of the middle finger as a gesture of expressing discontent. Channeling reactions to news about the “nuclear meltdown” in Fukushima, Matsumoto targeted institutions that he felt needed to take responsibility, like TEPCO. In collaboration with photographer Masakazu Miura, the New York-based artist created finger-shaped candles to be snapped burning outside a pre-selected targets, to “send a message” to authorities.

Because of growing crowds flocking to NYC’s High Line Park, which are anticipated to double when the final section is complete, the architects and engineers have decided to add a people-mover style tram. The tram will keep the pedestrian traffic moving, getting people from one side of the High Line to the other more quickly. The original rails will, of course, be left intact and the high-speed, levitating train line will be built alongside. Click ahead to learn more about the new, innovative addiction!

News has just broke that NYC Mayor Bloomberg has signed a contract with Google to replace all the city’s yellow cabs with Google’s patented driverless cars. The mayor’s office reported that 5000 driverless cabs will hit New York City streets by 2014, and the vehicles will come specially outfitted to meet the needs of busy New Yorkers. New in-vehicle amenities will include everything from ATMs, hot food vending machines, and what the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission calls “better entertainment options”.

The High Line urban park project in New York City opened last summer to tremendous excitement from locals and tourists alike looking to escape the bustling streets for a more peaceful, green enclave in the sky. NYC’s High Line is a project that exemplifies effective adaptive urban re-use in a city that is littered with structures and spaces that have since reached the end of their useful life. By turning an abandoned, elevated freight train track into a public park, this project has redefined the New York experience, affording never-before seen views of the city’s surrounding natural landscape as well as an expansive and intimate look into one of the world’s most dynamic urban environments. With the completion of the rest of the High Line currently in the works, we couldn’t think of a better time to catch up with one of the brilliant minds behind the design of this beautiful public space. I recently sat down with landscape designer James Corner, the lead designer behind the High Line, to get his personal perspective on the what it was like to take an abandoned train track and turn it into one of NYC’s best loved spots of greenery. Read on for my exclusive interview with James Corner below…

Everyone from design nerds and art critics to tech geeks and gadget junkies has sung the praises of “Talk to Me,” the Museum of Modern Art’s latest special exhibit that puts technology and interactive design in the spotlight. Put together by MoMA design curator Paola Antonelli, the show features nearly 200 pieces that range from talking plant sensors to robotic animal simulations to digital designs for building facades, each exploring how objects communicate with us. We were treated to a special guided tour of the exhibit by Antonelli herself, and we had the chance to talk with her about how technology impacts our lives and what she thinks about the future of sustainable design.

Last week MVRDV unveiled plans for “The Cloud” – two luxury condo towers in Seoul, South Korea joined by a pixelated “cloud” of protruding sections that bloom from the middle. Much to the surprise of MVRDV, the design has set off a media frenzy with hundreds of people claiming that the buildings were intentionally designed to evoke September 11 and the fall of the Twin Towers that once stood in New York City’s World Trade Center. MVRDV has released an official apology, but it will likely take much more than that for the crowds to quiet. What do you think – does the form of “The Cloud” resemble the explosion of the Twin Towers during the 9/11 attacks on New York City?

After nearly a decade of planning, arguments, and heated discussions, the National 9/11 Memorial has officially opened to the public in New York City. Designed by architect Michael Arad, the memorial is a sensitive, respectful complex in the heart of the new World Trade Center site. Two vast reflecting pools, located in the exact footprints of the Twin Towers, are the focus of the site. Standing at the edge of the large voids, with the waterfalls drowning out the sounds from the surrounding construction sites, one easily remembers the magnitude of the loss we experienced that day. Visitor passes to the memorial are booked through the end of October, but through our exclusive photo gallery, you can view the memorial and see its graceful elegance.
