In the past, Icelanders told time using a traditional measurement system called Eykt – the day was split into eight Eyktir consisting of three hours each. Inspired these traditions, designer Jón Helgi Hólmgeirsson created a 24 hr Eyktir clock entirely made from biodegradable layered cardboard.

Tommaso Guerra is an Italian designer, illustrator and street artist all rolled into one. And just like his multi-faceted self, his Lampada Ragno incorporates a network of six lamps connected at one point on the ceiling (“ragno” is the Italian word for “spider”). With pipes made in copper, and a delicate lamp shade in rounded wood riveted with aluminium, this piece is certainly a standout. We especially love the balance it strikes as a great interior lighting product and a work of art.

Japanese designer Yukihiro Kaneuchi recently unveiled a series of sculptural vases made from local sand. Dubbed Sand Vases, the four flower-container designs consist of a mix of crystals, renewable cork and sand from a nearby beach, all bound using waterproof resin. Elegantly shaped, they are the result of an exploration into typologies combined with Japanese games and architectural traditions.

Cardboard becomes a sleek and modern material choice with NBT Studio‘s AmbiHive, an ambient wall light and high-tech speaker all-in-one. Made from sustainable Inverted Corrugated Board (ICB), the AmbiHive uses premium vibrating sound technology attached to the underside of the “acoustically vibrating” cardboard. Low-energy LEDs light up in synch with the sounds for an ambient and dynamic effect. The design is also completely customizable online.

Glass is a fundamental building material with thousands of practical applications, and if you believe what the folks at Corning are selling, our use of glass is only going to grow in the coming years. But typical glass has a few flaws, as anyone who has stepped into a steamy room wearing glasses can attest – it has a tendency to fog up at inopportune times, and it can also produce annoying glare. But a team of researchers at MIT claim to have developed a new and improved glass that is both anti-fogging and glare-free. The near-invisible glass is also said to be self-cleaning, and it could have dozens of practical applications.

Swedish designer Andrej Malinin uses recycled newspaper and colorful paper waste to create a strong, compostable material that resembles wood. By gluing together hundreds of paper layers using a water-based product, he turns paper back to wood. We spotted Malinin’s “Back to Wood” project at an Eco-creative contest that won him a space within this years’ Milan Design Week.
