When gardening, we’re sure many of you have used herbicides to kill weeds and other invasive plants. However, the thing about herbicides is that in order to kill weeds, they are often very toxic and affect everything from those using them to potentially the groundwater. To prevent any possible environmental damage with herbicides in the future, a team from the Leibniz University in Hannover, Germany have developed a hi-tech alternative: weed-killing lasers!

According to the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, thunderstorms could be contributing to global warming due to their ability to capture and retain heat. If true, environmental scientists may have to drastically adjust their climate models in order to take this in account.

Bibliophiles are sure to get a kick out of BRC Designs‘ new “Spineless” chair, which is made up of the spines of hundreds of old books. Spotted at ICFF this past weekend, the literally literary seat has a color-blocked design that references Mondrian. The designer, Benjamin Rollins Caldwell, explained that he obtained many of the books for free at thrift shops and selected the spines that had the most titillating titles.

Chinese artist Ai Weiwei‘s new politically motivated work ‘Fragments’ transforms salvaged wood taken from Qing Dynasty temples into a series of monumental installations. At first glance the works appear chaotic and jumbled – they are composed of dismantled sequences of pillars and beams – but from above Weiwei has recreated a unique 3D map of the intricate borders of China, commenting on the fragility of the country’s foreign relations.

The taxi light is recognizable in great cities around the world, and now designer Guilhem de Castelbajac has immortalized the iconic item with his series of repurposed LED lamps, “Off Duty No More.” Made from an international array of recycled cab-toppers, the lamps caught our eye at this year’s ICFF.

French designer Philip Starck is exhibiting his elegant recycled Broom Chair at this year’s bustling ICFF. Made from 90% recycled industrial waste, the Broom Chair made its debut at Milan Furniture Fair, where we first spotted its classic, sustainable form. Designed for Emeco — the firm who made the 111 Navy Chair from recycled plastic bottles back in 2010 — this gorgeous piece is creating a quite stir at the NYC Design Festival.
