The guys over at Autoblog were on hand when Ample International unveiled the Eo, a new small electric vehicle that Ample is calling the “world’s first e-quadricycle.” The Eo was on display at the Electric Vehicle Symposium (EVS26) last week in Los Angeles. The vehicle features highly unique styling, but can seat up to three passengers and has an impressive all-electric range of 124 miles. Ample’s Shida Zheng describes the Eo as a “four-wheeled motorcycle, completely powered by electricity.”

Daimler’s Smart division, best known for small cars like the Smart ForTwo, has announced that it will bring an electric scooter to the market in 2014. Smart originally unveiled the escooter in 2010, alongside plans for a Smart ebike and electric versions of the ForTwo. The electric-powered ForTwo will launch this summer and delivery of the first Smart ebikes is just beginning.

By any measure, the release of Ford’s 2012 Focus Electric is a big deal. It’s the company’s first all-electric car, and Ford says it can be recharged in nearly half the time it takes to juice up the Nissan Leaf. As Ford gears up for the release sate, it will also make some serious environmental upgrades to dealerships that sell the new EV. The company announced this morning that any dealership that is authorized to sell the 2012 Ford Focus Electric must first must install EV charging stations and participate in a facility assessment aimed at reducing energy use.

Audi recently unveiled some changes to their 2013 Audi Q5 midsize SUV range, which will include their first ever hybrid model. The 2013 Audi Q5 Hybrid Quattro combines a four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery to give the SUV the power of a V6 engine, but with the fuel economy of a more efficient four-cylinder engine.

Coda Automotive and China’s Great Wall Motors have announced plans to co-develop an affordable electric vehicle that will be the first all-electric vehicle for worldwide distribution. The electric vehicle is intended to be the most affordable EV on the market, and will be designed for markets in North America, China, and Europe.

Although nothing comes out the tailpipe, electric vehicles do produce carbon emissions and other pollutants; the amount of emissions all depends on the power source from which they are charged. A new study from the Union of Concerned Scientists looks at how good or bad EVs in different parts of the US perform in terms of carbon emissions based in differences in how electricity is generated. The report found that location matters a great deal; in some parts of the country where electricity is generated mostly from coal, EVs performed no better than gasoline-powered hybrids.

Word on the street today is that General Motors will be updating the 2013 Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid with some styling upgrades and a new “EV Hold Mode” that will allow the Volt to stay in electric-only mode longer in slower city traffic. The “EV Hold Mode” forces the Volt to use its range-extender engine at higher speeds, like on a highway, which then reserves the battery power for slower speeds.

GM halted production of the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid in early March due to rising inventory, but now the automaker has restarted production earlier than expected. GM originally planned on temporarily halting production from March 19 to April 23 to reduce the inventory of unsold Volts sitting in Chevy showrooms, but production has been restarted a week earlier than planned, thanks to increased demand.

When Nissan first launched the Leaf electric car, buyers had to make a reservation on Nissan’s website and pay a $99 reservation fee. Now Nissan is making the buying process easier by allowing customers the ability to buy a Leaf at their local dealer. Buyers that still prefer to order their Leaf online can continue to use Nissan’s online reservation system, but now they will no longer have to pay the $99 reservation fee. The simplified buying process will make it easier for those buyers that were turned off by original buying process.

Ford has announced that the new 2012 Ford Focus Electric is set to become the first all-electric pace car ever to lead the field for a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Richmond 400. The Focus Electric pace car will be officially unveiled to the public at the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond on April 25. It will then perform all pace car duties at Richmond International Raceway on April 28.

Audi recently shared with Inhabitat a development that it’s been keeping under wraps – a new solution dubbed “e-sound” that helps pedestrians hear electric vehicles approaching. Audi’s future e-tron electric models are incredibly quiet and great for the environment, but their lack of sound isn’t great for pedestrians in urban settings. To combat this issue, the carmaker has been working on a noise to replicate a non-electric car’s motor. Read on to learn more and to check out a video showing their process.

Sales of GM’s Chevrolet Volt are stronger than ever, with sales in March spiking to 2,289. The numbers gave the Volt its best month ever – up 277 percent from one year ago. The good news comes despite recent negative press over battery fires that broke out in three Volts, and GM’s decision to temporarily cease manufacturing until April 23.

One home seller in Barrington, Illinois is apparently giving away a Tesla Model S electric sedan as a way to sweeten the deal for his $1.29 million house. According to the seller’s website (http://www.getafreetesla.com), he recently reduced the price of the home by $200,000 and now he’s even including his reserved 2012 Tesla Model S sedan as part of the deal.

The first images of Fisker’s next model, the Atlantic plug-in hybrid, have leaked onto the internet ahead of the model’s upcoming debut at the 2012 New York Auto Show. Originally dubbed the Fisker Nina project, the Atlantic will be Fisker’s second model following the larger Karma that is already on sale.

The word on the street today is that Ford will be rolling out the new Focus Electric in a “build-to-order” process that is similar to the production scheme used by PC manufacturer Dell. Mike Tinskey, Ford’s director of vehicle electrification recently spoke to BusinessGreen, and revealed that Ford has already received a significant number of orders for the electric-powered Focus and alluded to the new process of customization. The 2012 Ford Focus Electric EV is set to launch next month with a starting price of $39,200 before the eligible tax credits.
