Scottish designer Peter Ananin has created a way to bring a little more of the outside world into our everyday lives by creating personal miniature rural worlds dubbed MyBioPod. MyBioPod provides people with green fingers, a scientific streak or city dwellers with an innovative way to feel a little more connected to the natural world, as nature and technology are combined into a single device to study small ecosystems.

Designed by Arthur Brutter and Ido Bruno for dated schools in earthquake-prone areas, the Earthquake-Proof Table takes an age-old safety drill and turns it up a few notches by transforming a simple school desk into a safe refuge that can take on a ton of falling bricks!

Since launching last July, Grey Area has become a choice online destination for those seeking unique, artist-designed objects, from "Best Friends" skateboards to handmade headpieces. After opening pop-ups in Montauk last summer and then at the Bass Museum in Miami for the latest installment of Art Basel, co-founders Manish Vora and Kyle DeWoody decided to give their retail concept a permanent home with a showroom in NYC.
Opening Thursday, 8 March 2012, the Grey Area SoHo shop and showroom will present a rotating selection of wares on Snarkitecture's custom-crafted display system simply called "Shelve". The lacquered wood and fiberglass slab shelves seem to float against the wall like chunks of uncarved stone. A continuation of Alex Mustonen and Daniel Arsham's "Slab Table", Shelve also speaks to Snarkitecture's penchant for playing with topography and negative space—which can also be seen in their "Excavated Mirror" and "Slip Bench". Shelve comes in various dimensions and will sell from Grey Area starting at $400.
In addition to the shop, the showroom will host art installations and an ongoing series of performances and events. Stop by Tuesday through Saturday or make an appointment to see what they have in store.

You can't help but notice the 2013 Ford Fusion, a midsize category-busting car hell-bent on improving suburban driveways around the world. The new Fusion is the first car that very clearly articulates the ONE Ford mantra (cars designed for a global market) and the company's Kinetic design language (which debuted on the Evos concept car launched in Fall 2011 in Frankfurt).
Ford sold Aston Martin (in 2007) and Jaguar (in 2008) along with the other brands in their Premier Automotive Group. Perhaps the best thing the come out of that experience was the importance of design and how it can elevate a very expensive hand made car as well as a car you'll find all over your neighborhood and in every parking lot at every mall. There was no shortage of comments at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit yesterday that the new Fusion looked "Aston-like" or "Jaguar-like," things you don't usually hear about the most crowded and pedestrian segment of the automobile market. Part of this may be attributed to the raised hexagonal grill, narrow lights and rear license plate surround, which Mays says "create a terrific stance." Sexing up the midsize market is good for Ford, and good for all customers who seek to be inspired by design regardless of price point.
The Fusion brings a new level of features to an inexpensive, accessible car—or, as Ford's VP of Global Design and Chief Creative Officer J Mays puts it, "a car you are proud to drive." Standard features include Ford's Sync voice-activated control system and a lane drifting warning system. Options include blind-spot warning and automated parallel parking systems—things you're more likely to see on high end luxury cars.
Ford offers the extremely fuel efficient Fusion in five different four cylinder engines—an existing gasoline engine, two new EcoBoost turbo engines, a hybrid and plug-in hybrid. Mays elaborates, ""the mpg on this car is truly spectacular—26 mpg on the standard model, 47 mpg on the EcoBoost Hybrid, and 100 mpge on the Energi model. It's just game changing."
From what we've seen so far, Ford has come together to achieve something their competitors have failed to do—create an economy car that is desirable, practical, and affordable. I'm looking forward to road testing it.
The 2013 Ford Fusion will be available in the U.S. mid-2012 (with all models available by Fall 2012), and will be available in Asia and Europe as the Mondeo in 2013.

A newcomer to the crowd-sourced shopping scene, Nuji has set itself apart from sites like Pinterest and Svpply with a tightly-edited array of goods selected by its invite-only members since its launch a year ago. Created by European trio of creatives Dean Fankhauser, Anton Meryl Nithianandan and Vincent Thome, the site features a global assortment of finely crafted leather goods, stylish design-focused items and an array of quirky objects in between. To celebrate the site's talent for proffering distinctly covetable wares, below are 10 items found in our Cool Hunting Gift Guide that we sourced from Nuji.

Berlin-based architect Sigurd Larsen designed The Shrine (€4,000) as "a product of the labyrinthine courtyards of Kreuzberg." He moves beyond the traditional record player cabinet to include a maze of drawers where you can keep records, headphones, an LP player, whiskey and more.
The ultimate spy scope, the Clap Mini USB Camera ($55) allows you to capture snapshots on the go and easily upload them to any laptop. The tiny device runs on a rechargeable Lithium ion battery and shoots 1280x1024 resolution images.

Kurt Geiger's Isla Mittens (£35) are a delicate balance of form and function. The soft leather mittens unzip to reveal knitted fingerless gloves, sure to keep you warm even when fashion is the focus.
Known for their supremely crafted leather goods, Portland-based Tanner ($82) turns the classic camera strap into a handsome accessory that will only look better with time. The strap comes in natural leather (pictured) alongside a slew of other hues like oxblood, black and olive.

Originally from the 1980s, this salvaged six-digit inventory stamp ($22) has been reconstructed for modern use with any medium that needs a little extra ink or old-school numerical detailing.
A "representative of the era of the music cassette," the RE-BO ($1,200) is Bootleg Objects' interpretation of Jacob Jensen's Beocenter 1400, which he designed for Bang&Olufsen in 1973. This cleverly updated version now houses a smart card reader in place of the cassette slot, a DVD drive and a 16:9 TFT display.

Handcrafted in Italy from Florentine Vacchetta leather, Travelteq's sophisticated roll-up case (€65) holds 19 choice pencils and keeps them from rolling off the desk when not on the go.
Ikou Tschüss' signature crochet-trimmed scarf designs (£309) were borne from the Swiss label's desire to weigh down the accessory while riding a bike. Each is lovingly knitted by hand by "a network of grandmothers and passionate home-based workers."

Waterproof Aqua Notes ($13) are the perfect gift for those whose best ideas happen in the shower, or your favorite sailor.
A beautiful combination jewelry box and ring holder designed by Swedish architect firm Claesson Koivisto Rune, the brass "Belle" ($120) spins around like a toy top for added effect.

Hotels may play to the boutique experience by furnishing the public areas with a sturdy mix of handsome tables and chairs culled from high-end shops like Design Within Reach, but few go as far as San Francisco's Clift Hotel. The motley collection of designer furniture gracing the hotel's immense lobby would more likely be found in a museum or private home than a stopping place for hundreds of travelers, wheeling their luggage with kids in tow. As Clift's Vice President of Design Mari Balestrazzi explains, high-design furnishings represent an important component of the hotel's distinct persona. "We're like an interactive museum," she says. "The pieces are real and some are quite expensive but it would take the fun out of it if we didn't allow our guests to really use the spaces."
Conceived by Philippe Starck ten years ago, the diverse range of lobby furniture is not only intriguing to the eye, but it also keeps the space fresh from a design perspective. Upon entering the hotel, guests come across Roberto Matta's homage to surrealist artist René Magritte—a stool posed as a green apple in a black bowler hat—and to their right they'll find William Sawaya's octopus-like Darwish chair, a bronze four-seater custom-crafted for the hotel.
Salvador Dali's Leda table unites a cluster of chairs in the main area, including Michel Haillard's Horn Sofa and a plexiglass and bronze side chair, designed by Starck and developed by the famed French atelier Thierry Goux (now known as Rinck). A few feet away sits Crystal Farm's "Elk Gentleman's Chair," a rustic piece more traditionally placed in a cabin in the woods, but in a swanky hotel, manages to round out the lobby's warm vibes.
To the right of Gerard Garouste's 18-foot bronze fireplace, along the Brazilian cherry back wall, a gold-hued chaise perfectly juxtaposes a slightly gruesome Bronze Chair chair sculpted by Sawaya & Moroni.
Starck's aptly named Big Arm chair—the focus of a city-wide scavenger hunt and a piece of furniture guests are encouraged to climb on or crawl under to see a "childish" design surprise—serves as a perfect contrast to the hotel's "Angel Chair." Though sitting in that chair isn't forbidden, the "Angel Chair" is the only furnishing with a slight "do-not-touch" vibe. Vice President of Guest Experience Dave Freiberger explains that the beautifully ornate chair—positioned by itself near the lobby elevators—is the only one remaining from the original Clift lobby, designed in 1918. The leather chair features gargoyle-like lions and a cherubic boy carved into each wooden arm, recalling the hotel's formerly lavish Italian Renaissance decor.
Home to one of California's most expensive and unique collections of designer furniture, the Clift stands out for staying authentic to its boutique hotel atmosphere despite its 300 rooms. Balestrazzi speaks to the choice in luxury over durability, stating simply, "We want our guests to feel engaged by their surroundings."

It took a recent visit to one of our favorite Paris shops to realize that despite using their products all the time we've never written about them. Astier de Villatte is a 15 year old lifestyle powerhouse founded by Benoît Astier de Villatte and Ivan Pericoli. Their unique take on ceramics, paper goods, perfumes, candles, furniture, silverware, glassware and more are created in a Bastille workshop that used to house Napolean's silversmith.
Perhaps best known for their 18th- and 19th-century inspired handmade ceramics, many of which are designed with the equally multi-talented French artist Nathalie Lété. Their team of twenty ceramicists (perhaps the biggest in Paris) makes pottery the way Benoît's father taught him and his siblings. Starting with black Terracotta, each piece is finished with a milky glaze that amplifies the unique character of the clay, celebrating its imperfections and ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike.
A similar nod to the past styles and methods can be found in many of their other products, from scented erasers to the only hand-typeset agenda in the world. The two-page week layout also includes an important 8th day that changes each week, named after some of their favorite foods (Cassouletday anyone?). Created with a vintage printing press, the new 2012 agendas feature the same signature mosaic pattern and bright colors but now include the Astier team's insider tips on their favorite venues in New York as well as Paris. Studiohomme has a great video visiting Astier de Villate's print and ceramic workshops:
The candle market is certainly a saturated one, but quality shines through in these glass or ceramic votives with vegetable wax candles, often named for places that inspire olfactory overload: Alcatraz, Algiers, Honolulu and Naples among them. Recent additions include a series made in conjunction with Françoise Caron and the Japan-based fragrance company, Takasago: Cabourg, Quebec, Broadway, Zermatt and Yakushima. We've had the soda-inspired "Broadway" scent burning in the office for the last week—a nice way to rid the office from the smell of its new lunchtime infatuation with the Schnipper's Chicken Club sandwich.
Also new this fall is a collaboration with New York-based designer John Derian. The artist worked mostly on small plates, painting them with his signature menagerie of birds and insects, as well as sweetheart symbols and everyday household items. The John Derian collection for Astier de Villatte, as well as many other of their products, are available at his NYC boutique.
Astier de Villatte has a few shops in Paris, is available on their site and at stores in many countries. Check their site for details.

Other than sunshine, Spain has an abundance of laughter. Blame it on the jamón, verdejo wine or siestas, the good humor of the country's people shows up in design too. At this year's Habitat Valencia, we spotted several examples of one of our favorite ways to add wit to furniture and objects—anthropomorphic design.
From concepts that add function (like a light that doubles as a butler) to those that are just plain cute, the below represent some of the newest and best ways to add Spanish levity to your life.
Originally produced in 2009 for Lladró, Jaime Hayon's porcelain clown lamp is still an elegantly cheeky way to jazz up a room. That it turns off and on by a touch to its golden nose seals the deal.
Triangulo's new series of modular furniture called Crezko grows with kids, giving them appropriately-styled bedrooms for whichever age they are. The winking chair, produced by the new brand Kimoo, will rock infants to sleep and humor them when they're old enough to laugh.
Javier Ares Armero lights up the room with his Sisyphean Humallum lamps, which incorporates cord storage into the design.
Part of Estudio Marsical's Me Too kids furniture collection, the humorous Ladrillos (Spanish for cinder block) creates shelving through power of adorable little plastic creatures.
Bringing tons of personality to furniture for kids, bm showed off their Facebox in Valencia this year. The uber-cute rolling cabinet's drawer-pulls give it the appearance of having a face. Guaranteed to get a rise out of any fun-loving tyke, these cabinets (which come in multiple color combos and with different, funny-sized eyes) are a must-have in the design-forward children's bedroom.
Designed by Nacho Timon, Mr. Light is a well-considered lamp. Not only does the light illuminate for you, it also—by way of interchangeable arms—can act as a towel rack, butler or sitting companion. The cute, functional lamp is a great take on harnessing modular parts to offer dynamic functionality.
Fitting on a desk or fastened to a wall, the Handy by Vandidoo is more than a key hanger, it's a place to dump the entire contents of all your pockets. Holding keys, a wallet, mail, change, sunglasses or just about anything else that can fit on the steel-toothed tray, the Vandidoo borrows from one of the body's most useful designs for a high-functioning home accessory.
