Mexican-born, Netherlands-based designer José de la O unveiled a brilliant hanging pendant lamp that doubles as a vegetable garden at this year’s Milan Furniture Fair. Dubbed “Vicky”, the lamp uses a special bulb that provides increased light in the blue spectrum, which helps the plants grow. The designer sees the lamp not only as a source of light but also as a resource for growing food in urban environments that lack space for a garden.

In an effort to help prevent further loss of plant biodiversity around the world, four leading botanical institutions have announced plans to team up and catalog every plant on Earth. The New York Botanical Garden, the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh will join together to develop the first comprehensive online catalog of the world’s plants. The massive project will include information about as many as 400,000 different plant species, and it will be available online for free in 2020.

Laced with 7,000 vibrant orchids, ferns, and other flora, Patrick Blanc’s bevy of spectacular vertical gardens is now on display at the New York Botanical Garden’s Annual Orchid Show. Blanc transformed the interior of the glass-enclosed Enid A. Haupt Conservatory into a magical garden of floral delights complete with green waterfall walls, planted archways and a vegetation-lined cube in all the colors of the rainbow. Now here’s an idea so ingenious, we’re kicking ourselves for not thinking of it first – a biodegradable flower pot that you can plant right into the earth. If you’ve ever purchased a plant with the intention of replanting it into your outdoor garden right away, you might have noticed how wasteful it is for it to come in its own plastic container (which you might end up having to throw away). SoilWrap is a product that does away with that frustration because it acts as a protective cover while the plant is being shipped and informational packaging while the plant is on a store shelf, but once it’s completed those two tasks, it can be planted right into the ground. Developed by Costa Farms and Ball Horticulture, the thin packaging is made of mirel, a bio-based material that can break down in your soil or be composted.

Two species of trees thought to be extinct were recently rediscovered in a remote coastal forest area in the African nation of Tanzania. Erythrina schliebenii, a type of coral tree, and Karomia gigas were rediscovered by botanists from Tanzania’s University of Dar es Salaam. While the finding of their continued growth is immensely encouraging, the species remain in “critical danger of extinction,” according to Roy Gereau, of Missouri Botanical Garden’s Africa and Madagascar Department, as rapid deforestation persists in Tanzania.
