Adrián Villar Rojas is a master at creating massive sculptures of clay, wood and cement that remind us about the uncomfortable relationship humans have with nature. My Family Dead, a representation of a life-sized blue whale in the forest outside of his native Ushuaia, Argentina is one such example. When you are not moved by the suffering the magnificent creature appears to have endured, the tree stumps protruding around and out of the whale’s body spark curiosity over what was there first – the whale or the trees.

“Wij krijgen Kippen,” which roughly translates from the Dutch to ”we pick up chickens,” has an unusual educational tool for informing the public about energy usage — their giant egg wanders through the streets of Amsterdam, and nests itself everywhere that local energy is generated. The group’s objective is to help the borough of Amsterdam Zuid transition from traditional energy sources to new, locally produced green energy. Supported by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation, Wij krijgen kippen is comprised of a growing group of civilians, entrepreneurs and civil servants. As for their giant wandering egg, it serves as a public meeting point where individuals can learn about the non-profit and their green energy goals, while at night it is transformed into a large-scale projection unit for outdoor movie screenings.

Tommaso Guerra is an Italian designer, illustrator and street artist all rolled into one. And just like his multi-faceted self, his Lampada Ragno incorporates a network of six lamps connected at one point on the ceiling (“ragno” is the Italian word for “spider”). With pipes made in copper, and a delicate lamp shade in rounded wood riveted with aluminium, this piece is certainly a standout. We especially love the balance it strikes as a great interior lighting product and a work of art.

From a family that built part of their NYC apartment out of LEGOs to the world record-shattering tower that was just completed in South Korea, we’ve seen some pretty incredible LEGO creations here at Inhabitat, but few are as beautiful and ingenious as LEGO builder Thomas Poulsom‘s birds. Poulsom’s set includes a Robin Red Breast, a Blue Tit, a Kingfisher, a Puffin named Penelope (complete with cliff), and he built them to be as close to their real size as possible. Head over to Inhabitots to see a slide show the complete set.

Artist Doris Salcedo thought-provoking art transforms reclaimed items of furniture into politically charged sculptural work. In 2003 she took over a derelict spot between two buildings in Istanbul, stacking 1,500 chairs on top of one another that towered over passers-by like a small building. The chairs were piled in disarray, the huge number of items serving as a memorial to the many faceless members of society whose lives, work and even disappearance goes by unnoticed.
