Author Angela Youngman has released a guidebook that will immerse you in world of green roofs through case studies, imagery, and must-know terminology related to design, build, and installation of these vegetated scapes. Green Roofs is not a self-help manual, but rather a light read that takes a broad stroke look at many of the variables and considerations surrounding what should really be called “living buildings.”

Our friends over at Dwell partnered with Pacific Standard Time to search for the best architectural LEGO masterpiece for Dwell on Design, and they’ve just announced their five finalists in the competition. This year’s contestants were asked to recreate the classic California mid-century modern home, all in the classic toy bricks. Readers of Dwell voted to select the finalists, and a winner will be selected next month!

Historic houses can become energy-efficient without losing charm – just look at the Galveston Historical Foundation‘s Green Revival House at 3101 Avenue Q in Galveston, Texas. The project started when GHF moved the house 17 blocks to a new lot after Hurricane Ike destroyed its foundation. The Green Revival House features new insulation, four solar panels, two rainwater cisterns, and it’s one of the nation’s first historic buildings to achieve Platinum certification through the LEED for Homes program. GHF completed the project in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the 1772 Foundation.

Over the last five years architecture studio José María Sánchez García was faced with the challenge of restoring Spain’s ancient archaeological site the Temple of Diana. Located in the city of Merida, the Temple dates back to the Roman times, when it was originally built as a forum, and the central point of Merida. The renovations were designed by the Spanish architects in order to revive elements of the site’s unique place in history, while also establishing the surrounding space within modern architectural discourse.

Previously, LivingHomes had introduced the C6, an affordable three-bedroom home, but the company rolled out this smaller version for homeowners who want a smaller and more energy-efficient option. The sleek, two-bedroom, two-bathroom home is a good fit for smaller infill lots common in cities or for eco-conscious homeowners who want to save on construction and installation costs.

The term ‘building science’ is used quite often now in sustainable building circles, but much of what we understand of it can be traced back to the work of Dr. Joe Lstiburek, founder of Building Science Corporation. He is anything but your typical engineer or scientist who spends time crunching numbers or hiding away in a lab. Lstiburek has spent most of his career out in the field, testing and examining what works and what doesn’t. Many of the building standards today — from building codes to ASHRE to testing methodology — have his finger prints all over them, and his tough love criticism of building design is undercut with his wry humor and, of course, an encyclopedic knowledge of building construction.
