Any Inhabitat reader knows how much we love shipping container architecture, so you can imagine how excited we were when we learned that a market made entirely from shipping containers would be opening in New York City, home to many of our writers and editors. Well, this past weekend, the market finally opened! Called Dekalb Market, the space is constructed from 22 recycled shipping containers and located in Downtown Brooklyn. Local designers, restaurants, and shops moved in this weekend, and we were there on opening day to get a first look! Hit the jump to see our exclusive photos!

This sewage plant must have made quite a stink when Dick van Gameren architects proposed to convert it into apartments more than a decade ago, long before adaptive re-use became fashionable. Today it stands as a testament of what can be achieved with a little bit of creative thinking and will. Located in Amsterdam-West, the now defunct sewage plant was incorporated into a new housing project. Instead of demolishing it or giving it a pretty facelift, the architects chose to leave it in its raw form, scrubbed it down a bit, no doubt, and then made a few simple interventions to create what is now a complex of naturally-lit apartments.

The mortar and pestle is one of the most ancient utensils in the contemporary chef's arsenal, and Eero Aarnio has given the classic grinder a makeover. Using smooth, playful curves reminiscent of his popular '67 Ball Chair, Aarnio redefines the generally clunky mortar with a short cylinder base and a polished, ergonomic pestle.
Aarnio designed this piece for Alessi, saying of his work there, "I approach product design from two different angles: firstly, from a study of the possibilities that new materials bring to the design process and secondly, through creativity based solely on feelings, which in turn brings you closer to art and endless possibilities." The "Aroma" will debut with the Alessi Fall/Winter 2011 collection in August.
