Ten years in the making, Leslie McGuirk's latest children's book, If Rocks Could Sing is now available. A simple A-is-for-apple approach to learning the alphabet is enhanced by the artist's imagery of rocks that take form of both the letters and the words they describe.
The project started when McGuirk moved to Florida and began taking long walks on the beach looking for shells. "All I found were rocks," the artist recalled in a recent chat. "But then I found one that looked like a letter and the idea for the book came to me instantly." From there she began collecting letters and shapes. She recently found a K-shaped rock—the last holdout—and the project was complete.
If Rocks Could Sing is available at Amazon.

Tripp Kennedy (Patrick Dempsey) ambles into a bank near closing time, just as two different gangs unwittingly converge to rob it. A shoot-out erupts, and Tripp tackles the smart, pretty teller, Kaitlin (Ashley Judd), to protect her. The gangs-one clearly made up of pros and the other a couple of buffoons named Peanut Butter (Tim Blake Nelson) and Jelly (Pruitt Taylor Vince) -have deadlocked themselves in a Mexican standoff. The bank’s security system starts the end-of-day lockdown and seals everyone into the building. As the night evolves, a hilarious game of cat and mouse ensues as Tripp and Kaitlin try to save the day, escape being killed, and avoid falling in love . . . almost.
Inspired since 2007 to bring color to corporate America with whimsical belts looped around the waists of businessmen, Washington, D.C. Tucker Blair is now teaming up with New York-based retailer, Opening Ceremony. Their collection of belts for men and women is a perfect marriage of Tucker Blair's artistry with embroidered leather belts and Opening Ceremony's emphasis on creativity.
Among the collection's five designs is a particularly fitting belt featuring various colorful flags. This international motif references Opening Ceremony's mission of celebrating the work of designers and artists abroad. The other designs include a standard leopard print, an eye-catching geometric pattern and perhaps the most adventurous, quirky white rabbits prancing across a black scene.
Beginning 15 July 2011, snag one of these snazzy, limited-edition needlepoint belts at Opening Ceremony's New York and Los Angeles locations or at Ace Hotel in NYC. Otherwise, visit Opening Ceremony's website to purchase one online for $110.

Section two of New York City’s High Line Park opened this week to great acclaim, and Team Inhabitat were among the first to catch a glimpse of this amazing new green space! The High Line is a renovated train track that has been turned into a gorgeous greenway in the sky on the West side of Manhattan near the Hudson River. Conceived of by Friends of the High Line and executed by James Corner Field Operations and Diller, Scofidio and Renfro for the City of New York, the High Line is one of our favorite urban spaces. Check out our video for an exclusive tour of the High Line by our own Jill Fehrenbacher — which includes behind-the-scenes tidbits from the minds who created the project. Even if you’re not in New York City, our video shows you the sweeping views, gorgeous greenery and inspired design behind this incredible urban park..

Under the bonnet of the new BMW M5 lies a newly developed, high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo (consisting of Twin Scroll Twin Turbo technology, a cross-bank exhaust manifold, High Precision Injection petrol direct injection and VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control), maximum output of 412 kW/560 hp at 6,000 – 7,000 rpm and peak torque of 680 Newton metres (502 lb-ft) between 1,500 and 5,750 rpm.

The instantaneous power delivery and sustained thrust familiar from M cars are the key to acceleration of 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds (0 – 200 km/h/124 mph: 13.0 seconds). Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle stands at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres / 28.5 mpg imp (CO2 emissions: 232 g/km). While output has increased by around 10 per cent and maximum torque is up by more than 30 per cent, the new BMW M5 burns over 30 per cent less fuel than its predecessor.
For 24 years the house of Alessi in Milan was the store on Corso Matteotti, originally designed by Ettore Sottsass and later renovated by Atelier Mendini. Nevertheless, last week Alessi opened a totally new store conceived by design star Martí Guixé.
The project follows the collaborations for the Shop Museum in Paris and the recent experience of their exhibition at the Triennale Design Museum. Just a short walk from Montenapoleone, the store is located in via Manzoni, close to the metro station La Scala Theatre and the beautiful Poldi Pezzoli Museum.
Divided into four different sections, the space includes a large entrance overlooking Via Manzoni and an area called Museum to display the most sculptural objects in a gallery-like setting. A retail section is reminiscent of the old space, though turned upside down, and "Wunderkammer" hosts new collections and curiosities. Each section has its own strong character, with different lighting systems custom-designed by Guixé himself and produced by Danese.
The predominant colors are glossy red, shiny white and grey, while the materials are mainly aluminum, ceramic, resins and wood. The result is a perfect mixture of Alessi spirit and a design gallery.
